How to Prepare Your Sub-Floor for Cork Flooring

The very first thing you should do with your sub-floor is clean it. We recommend using a mild-detergent and a wring-able mop. You don't want to soak the sub-floor, just simply remove any dirt and debris as we move on to leveling. You'll probably want to sweep the sub-floor before you mop if there is a lot of large debris.Do not walk or install tiles on the adhesive until it dries, which is usually twenty to thirty minutes. You must install your cork flooring tiles or planks before it dries completely, which is usually an hour after application.

Now it's time to level out the sub-floor. This will prevent and high or low spots that can result in cracked tiles or allow water to pool. You'll want to use a level to locate any high or low spots in the sub-floor. Depending on which brand of cork flooring you're using they may recommend specific filler for leveling the sub-floor. Make sure you consult with the manufacturer specifications before using any filler. When sanding down low areas make sure you don't sand off too much or you'll just be filling that same area.

You'll need to use a primer on you sub-floor regardless of what type of sub-floor it is. You'll want to use whatever primer is recommended by the cork flooring manufacturer of the product you're using. A simple paint roller, and paint tray will be all the tools you'll need. Make sure you use a thin, even coat and that the sub-floor is covered completely. Most commercial primers are usually dry within thirty to forty five minutes. You cannot apply any adhesive until the primer is completely dry or you'll have a botched installation.
